Drift Mania 2009 in Toronto

Drift Mania Canandian Championship (DMCC) is one of the more exciting motorsport event in Toronto. The DMCC event happened over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday to competing in the most intense drifting of the year.

In its 5th year, DMCC is growing strong. Having been to DMCC 2008 and 2009, I have got to say that the audience for this year has increase tremendously. Originally, DMCC isĀ  a one-day event. Since DMCC 2009 was such a huge event, they had to expand it into two days. On Saturday, the Amateurs competed against each other, while the Pros competed on Sunday.

The event was seperated into three sections: Car show, sponsor booths (models!) and the track. The car show consisted of many different modified cars from the many different local car clubs. The sponsor booths were promoting many different car parts and accessories. Most important, the car models were very energetic and engaging. Very often, they gave nice swags and posed openly for us to take pictures.

The Pro drifters started their practice at 11Am in the morning that lasted until 1PM. After practice, there was a brief break time before the drivers went into the hangar to participate in the autograph session. Following that, the preliminary round began. 19 Pro drifers went two rounds of drifting. The best 16 drifters got to move on. Here is a judging table on how each run is judged on:

  • Line: there are clipping points located on several curves on the track. The closer the car drifts side way to reach clipping points, the more points they get.
  • Angle: car side way = good
  • Speed: the speed that the car enters the first corner
  • Impact: how the audience perceives the drift. The more rowdy we are, the better they score

Pat Cyr’s preliminary round video:

The top 16 was a blast. Each battle consists of two rounds between two drifters. The drivers take turn to lead. To get the most point while leading, you must go into the first corner hard and drift the closest to the 4 clipping points on the track. Meanwhile, the two driver is chasing the lead. For the chaser to get the most points, they must replicate the same drift as the lead and be as close as possible (and even over take) to the lead driver. If a driver spins out, they automatically lose the round. Here are some of the highlights from the races.
