Tekken 6 came out a week ago and Namco still has not addressed a patch to fix the lag issue that everyone is complaining about.
Over the weekend, I did a little experiment and I was able to play every round of Tekken 6 lag free. Here’s a few things you can try on your own to ensure a lag free experience with Tekken 6 online.
Before I begin, let me tell you about my setup so that you can compare it with yours:
- Playstation 3
- Linksys Router WRT54GL
- High Speed DSL Internet Connection
Here are some general tips to reduce lag in online Tekken 6 matches
- Make sure your computers are not downloading
- Turn off idle computers on the network (background services and programs can sometimes hog bandwidth)
- Use wired connection to you PS3
- You can try to open the ports that Tekken 6 uses: 80, 443, 5223, 3478, 3479, 3658
The online lag issue in Tekken 6 is definitely a matter that Namco has to look into. For the time being, I have been able to discover the best way to play online without any lag. However, keep in mind that there is a lot of limitation in this method (no ranked matches).
The method to play Tekken 6 with no lag is to:
Create a Custom Game with the following settings:
- Any number of matches
- Any time limit
- 2 Players
- Private slot is optional
- Mic off
Only play people with full Green Bar.
With the above method, 90% of your matches will be lag free.
As simple as this method may sound, most of the players online have not tried to create a custom game (stop creating games with 4 players if you don’t need to) and opt to play Quick Matches instead.
I have a feeling that the main reason why Tekken 6 lags for everybody is because the matchmaking system fails to match players up from the same region. I also believe that having more than 2 players in a room will greatly increase the latency. Especially when a player joins or leaves the game. During rank matches, I noticed that the connection symbol is often misleading. Sometimes a player with green bar in ranked matches can still have 1 second delays.
Hopefully Namco will iron these bugs real soon. It’s a shame to see such a polished fighting game go down because of the online mode being unplayable.
